Taylor Swift Drops Nearly $18 Million on Rhode Island Mansion: Report

For Taylor Swift, Cape Cod is so 2012. The country singer has reportedly dropped nearly $18 million for a new seaside mansion in the coastal village of Watch Hill, Rhode Island.


After being photographed house-hunting on April 15 in the exclusive area, which is part of the town of Westerly, the 23-year-old has purchased an eight-bedroom estate, with over 700 feet of shoreline, for $17.75 million, according to TMZ. The website reports the "I Knew You Were Trouble" singer paid cash for the transaction – and she seemed to get a decent deal, paying well under the $24 million asking price.

Real estate agent Jim Michalove from Seaboard Properties in Stonington, Connecticut, confirmed the sale to the Providence Journal, but wouldn't identify the buyer, citing a confidentiality agreement.

According to the listing, the 17,000-square-foot oceanfront home is called High Watch – and at 65 feet above sea level, it is touted as the highest point of direct waterfront land on the entire Eastern Seaboard.

Because of the amazing scenery, the four-story home, which was built in 1930 and sits on 5.25 acres, features floor-to-ceiling windows in many of the 16 rooms. While Swift is writing her songs, she can gaze out at the "beautiful ocean views" from her master suite, which has a marble fireplace (there are eight total in the house) and two en suite full baths (one with a whirlpool tub).

The lavish home also features a "cheerful sitting room," library, game room, service kitchen, and extra-large five-car heated garage. And let's not forget the pool, pool house, many terraces, and a widow's walk/roof terrace.

High Watch was sold by Jim Benson, the former chief executive of John Hancock Life Insurance Co., and his wife, who bought the property in 1996 for $3.5 million. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Benson described the house by saying, "It's like being on a large ocean liner, only it doesn't go anywhere."

Swift, who is based in Nashville, has taken an interest in real estate as of late. Last summer she became the butt of jokes after dropping $4.8 million for a house in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, which bordered on the famed Kennedy compound, because she was dating 17-year-old Conor Kennedy at the time. But she had the last laugh, flipping the house after a few months and making a nearly $1 million profit.

And she certainly has the money to spend. Currently on tour supporting her album "Red," Swift came in No. 2 on Forbes magazine's Highest-Paid Female Musicians list for 2012, earning a reported $57 million last year. So $17.75 million is drop in the bucket, if that is in fact what she paid. (omg! has not yet heard back from Swift's rep – or the realtor – regarding the real estate transaction.)

In an interview with Vanity Fair earlier this year, the singer, who details her personal life in her chart-topping songs, quipped, "Apparently I buy houses near every boy I like." So now that she has the house, we can't wait to see who her love interest in Rhode Island will be.

So why weren't the Smith men also having fun in the sun? Will and (Kylie Jenner's maybe-sorta boyfriend) Jaden were off on their own trip to Japan -- but not for play. The father and son were there to promote their upcoming movie, "After Earth," ahead of its May 31 release. The M. Night Shyamalan sci-fi flick features the Smiths as a father and son stranded on Earth 1,000 years after the rest of humanity has escaped. In it, Will's character is injured, so it's left up to 14-year-old Jaden's character to find help.

Jada has also been hard at work herself promoting the new documentary that she and Will exec produced, called "Free Angela and All Political Prisoners," about 1960s radical and political activist Angela Davis, which opened Friday.

Beyonce's 'Back To Black' Helps Make 'The Great Gatsby' A Bit 'Darker' Jay-Z enlisted his superstar wife to put her spin on Amy Winehouse's classic tune.

Baz Luhrmann enlisted some of the greatest voices of the new millennium for "The Great Gatsby," including Jay-Z, will.i.am, Lana Del Rey and Fergie. But, one lady shines particularly bright on the May 7 album, and that is Jay's own leading lady, Beyonce.

She not only appears with Andre 3000 on a haunting cover of Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black," which premiered on producer Mark Ronson's radio show over the weekend, but Emeli Sande covers Bey's classic "Crazy In Love" for the release.

Baz Luhrmann Describes Selecting The Cover Songs On 'The Great Gatsby' Soundtrack



Director Luhrmann spoke to MTV News over the weekend about how he worked with his team, including Hova and the Bullitt's Jeymes Samuel, to add some new-age musical sparkle to the Jazz Age love story. Baz said, "[James is] a really great friend of [Jay's] and just a unique human being. He defines energy; he defines spirit and he's a pop cultural genius. And I worked with Anton Monsted ... a great little team."

It was at Jay's suggestion that Bey's cover of Wine house's tune make the final cut of the soundtrack. "We were looking for, 'How do we have a darker moment?' and he said have a listen to this and he played it," he recalled, and after a few spins, it was confirmed it should appear.

"Crazy In Love," on the other hand, was all Baz and Monsted's doing. He recalled, "I mean 'Crazy In Love,' does it make you think of any character in the book? I don't know and then a great epiphany was that I wanted it to blend between the modern music and the traditional. [Roxy Music's] Bryan Ferry for years has been obsessing with this really traditional jazz band ... and then Emilie Sande does the vocal; that's where we go."

However, Baz isn't just singing Bey's praises. He's pretty stoked about all the folks he got to work with on the album, as he looks forward to the film's premiere on May 10. He said, "We worked with so many people, so many artists, but it was always captained between Jay and I. He is a serial collaborator. He is one the most professional people I've worked with. And he's funny. ... He can be bother serious.....

Kanye West To Close Out 'SNL' Season Ben Affleck will host the May 18 episode of 'Saturday Night Live,' where the rapper may debut a track from his upcoming LP.

We all know that Kanye West prides himself on not dealing with the press (unless he's upset about his placement on the "Hottest MCs List"), but since he's now confirmed to perform on the season finale of "Saturday Night Live," maybe he'll also participate in a skit or two and poke some fun at himself.

The first whispers of a possible Kanye performance made the Internet rounds last week, but on Friday (April 26), an official tweet has confirmed that the G.O.O.D. Music CEO will take the stage on the season finale of "SNL." Ben Affleck has been tapped to host the May 18 show.

'Ye's last appearance on "SNL" was back in October 2010 when he treated the crowd to performances of "Runaway" and "Power" from his then-current album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. No word yet on what he'll perform this time around, but we'd like to hope that it will be a track from his anticipated and still-untitled upcoming 6th solo album.

Kanye has been spending a lot of time in Paris recently recording the LP and fans are getting excited for his new collaboration with Daft Punk. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Robots revealed that he laid down some vocals over drum beats they presented to him, ("It was very raw: he was rapping — kind of screaming primally, actually," they said) while he also previewed a couple tracks for them.

Dwayne Johnson(THE ROCK) Maintains His Tough Guy Status Even After Emergency Surgery

Despite being sidelined by surgery, Dwayne Johnson is still one tough guy.
The actor and wrestler, better known as The Rock, had an emergency hernia operation on Monday, which kept him from attending the Los Angeles premiere of his latest flick, "Pain & Gain." But a photo he posted from the hospital shows he's still a man of steel.

Outfitted in a Superman T-shirt and surgical cap, the 40-year-old channeled another superhero, The Hulk, in the animated picture, which showed him flexing his buff arms as he sat in a hospital bed amid medical equipment.
"Surgery a success," he tweeted. "Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend. #WeFallWeRise"
Johnson's injury didn't take place on a movie set. It was sustained in the ring when he faced off with John Cena during a WrestleMania bout to defend his WWE championship title. Not only did the action movie star lose the match, he seriously injured his abdomen.
"In the middle of last night's Wrestlemania match I tore my abdomen & abductor muscles off the bone. Just part of the job," he tweeted in early April. Then on Sunday, he announced that he was going under the knife, and his doctor had to "push my intestines back thru the tear in my abdomen. Kinda romantic."
Johnson was missed by his "Pain & Gain" co-stars at Monday's premiere, although Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Mackie had a few laughs at his expense, which shows above

Obama threatens "family tattoo" if daughters get their own

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If they were thinking about getting tattoos, the Obama daughters may want to reconsider.

Speaking on NBC's "Today" show in a segment originally filmed before the Boston Marathon bombings, President Barack Obama revealed the strategy he and First Lady Michelle Obama have been using to keep their daughters away from tattoos.

"What we've said to the girls is, 'If you guys ever decide you're going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo, in the same place, and we'll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo,'" Obama said.

"Our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that somehow that's a good way to rebel."

During the segment, the president also said he understood his wife's "slip of the tongue" when she called herself a "single mother" in early April, noting that they were often apart for a week at a time when he was campaigning for the Senate and presidency.

"I tend to cut my wife or anybody some slack when it comes to just slips of the tongue," he said.

"But there's no doubt that there have been times where Michelle probably felt like a single mom ... She definitely, I think, understands the burdens that women in particular tend to feel if they're both responsible for child rearing and they're responsible for working at the same time," he added.

It's politics as usual for Jay-Z. In a week where the rap icon and celebrity mogul indirectly drew a response from President Barack Obama, Hov was saluted by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a Time cover story.

Hov was one of seven celebrities to cover Time for its Most Influential People in the World issue.

"Jay-Z embodies so much of what makes New York New York," Bloomberg opened, toasting Jigga's rise from Marcy Housing Projects in Brooklyn. "When no one would sign him to a record contract, he created his own label and built a music empire — before going on to design clothing lines, open sports bars and, most recently, represent professional athletes."
